Job description

Under the general supervision of the RN Unit Manager or RN Supervisor, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides skilled nursing care to residents in the skilled area of the nursing home.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE PO(1) Delivers nursing care in accordance with physicians’ orders and with acceptable nursing standards and practices in accordance with federal, state, and local standards (e.g., administers routine and other necessary medication to residents; checks medication to ensure proper prescription and dosage; orders medications from the pharmacy; ensures med-carts are locked when not in use and counts narcotics at the end of each shift; obtains and records residents’ vital signs; monitors oxygen levels; administers treatments as prescribed by physician; observes and reports symptoms and conditions of residents to the physician; responds to emergency situations; starts IV’s and completes IV flow sheets; inserts, irrigates, and remove catheters; checks temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; administers enemas; administers oxygen; performs tracheotomy cleaning and suctioning; changes dressings; tube feeds residents, etc.).


28% (2) Receives reports on patient’s condition; completes all necessary documentation in nurse’s notes, care plans, and medication administration records; makes rounds of nursing unit; prepares and investigates incident reports; communicates with residents’ private physician updating on any changes in condition; notifies family of any critical change in residents’ condition; assists with preparation of transfers and resident transports; arranges for x-rays and stat laboratory work; prepares and maintains records and reports.


5% (3) Acts as a lead worker to the STNA’s and Resident Service Aides (e.g., schedules and assigns tasks; answers questions; assists with training, etc.).


2% (4) May assist the dining room serving meals, as needed.


(5) Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.


(6) Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.


(7) Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.


(8) Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


5% (1) Performs other related duties as necessary.

(2) Required to work second and third shift.
