Job description

We’re seeking an ambitious, startup-minded Senior Software Engineer to build and harden Gone’s end-to-end recommerce platform. You’ll be a senior hands-on engineer on a small team, owning systems end to end and raising the engineering bar (code review, release discipline, incident response) as we scale as we scale from seed stage towards next phases of growth.

What You'll Do

  • Own backend systems end to end. Design and build the services, APIs, and data stores that power the product. Make sound tradeoffs on scale, reliability, latency, and cost, and be ready to defend them in review.

  • Ship fast without shipping junk. Write efficient, well-tested code and get it to production quickly. Use AI coding tools heavily, and hold their output to the same bar as your own.

  • Run the cloud infrastructure. Build and operate our GCP footprint: compute, networking, data, and the pipelines connecting them. Infrastructure as code, sane costs, less manual work over time.

  • Set the engineering bar. You're early enough to shape how we work, from code review and CI/CD to deploys and on-call. Review human and AI-generated code for correctness, security, and operability.

  • Build the safety net. Testing, metrics, logging, and alerting that catch problems before customers do.

  • Operate what you build. When production breaks, you debug it, fix it, write the postmortem, and harden the system.

  • Write things down. Architecture decisions and runbooks, so the next hire doesn't have to reverse-engineer the platform.

  • Figure out AI-native development with us. Use AI across the whole lifecycle, from writing code to running infra and debugging, and help the team learn what actually works. Nobody has this playbook finished yet.

  • Mentor and collaborate. Guide junior engineers, and work directly with ops, customer service, and design to ship the right thing.

Key Responsibilities

  • System design: Design systems that meet business needs.

  • Coding: Write clean and efficient code.

  • Engineering practices: Strengthen code review, CI/CD, release discipline, and on-call/incident response across the team.

  • Code review: Review code for quality and identify issues.

  • Testing: Design and run test cases to identify defects and ensure quality.

  • Documentation: Document code and systems to ensure quality and maintainability.

  • Operate what you build: Debug production issues, respond to incidents, and write postmortems.

  • Mentoring: Guide junior engineers and monitor their progress.

  • AI-native workflows: Use AI coding tools fluently and help the team get better at working with them.

  • Collaboration: Work with other teams, including graphic designers, customer service, and project managers.

Who You Are

You were an early engineer (roughly #3 to #10) at a startup that actually grew, seed to Series B or beyond. You’ve worn many hats, owned ambiguity, and watched engineering practices mature as the company scaled. That experience is where real engineering culture comes from, and it’s what we want you to bring to a team that’s still building its muscles.

You’re backend-leaning but comfortable full-stack, fluent in both Python and TypeScript. You’ve been on-call for something that made money, you’ve broken production and cleaned it up, and you reach for a postmortem instead of a scapegoat. You’ve made AI part of how you work, to move faster and to keep getting better at the job, and you can show us how.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Full-stack experience (both front-end and back-end), backend-leaning, with a strong interest in AI and a desire to grow in that direction.

  • Fluent in Python and TypeScript.

  • Tech Stack: Google Cloud preferred, but any major cloud is fine, the concepts transfer. Day-to-day: Python, TypeScript, Next.js/React, Node.js, Firestore/Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, Cloud Run.

  • Comfortable setting up cloud security: IAM and security policies, secrets management, and infrastructure as code (Terraform).

  • Practical experience integrating with APIs of cloud-based solutions.

  • Knowledgeable about cloud-native, asynchronous, event-driven data systems.

  • Solid understanding of system architecture and how to design scalable, reliable solutions.

  • Has operated something in production: been paged, debugged a live issue, and written a postmortem.

  • Hands-on coder who stays close to the work and uses AI coding tools well. You know when to hand work to them, when to review closely, and when to write it yourself.

  • Get Stuff Done (GSD) attitude with exceptional ownership. Always learning.

  • Genuinely aligned with our mission and motivated to raise the bar for the whole team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Retail, marketplace, or secondhand/recommerce exposure.

  • Experience with Shopify and/or HubSpot.

  • Exposure to operations and logistics.

  • Background in developing consumer-focused websites or apps.

  • A passion for creating exceptional user experiences.

Compensation

Compensation range: $130,000 to $170,000 + equity (stock options).

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis. It may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
