Trellis Health is a pregnancy and postpartum health app pioneering a next-generation consumer health platform.

We are seeking a Backend and AI/ML focused Software Engineer. This is a pivotal role designing data heavy scalable backend systems, leveraging AI architectures, and APIs to power transformative health experiences within a fast-moving, mission-driven, early-stage startup. Trellis Health is VC-backed, early stage and moving fast.

The ideal candidate:

  • has 5+ years experience building scalable backend systems. Plus if experienced with Python; building privacy-first and HIPAA-compliant.
  • has experience with LLMs, AI architectures.
  • is excited about early stage product building

šŸ› ļø About the Role:

As a foundational member of our engineering team, you'll play a pivotal role in developing the backbone of our platform. We welcome tinkerers, self learners, explorers and doers. Your work will involve designing and implementing HIPAA-compliant software, developing APIs and integrations, and building privacy-preserving architectures, including self-hosted LLMs and AI agents. You'll collaborate closely with product and design teams to deliver seamless, user-focused solutions in a fast-paced, iterative development environment.


****šŸ’Ŗ What You'll Do:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and 3rd party integrations.
  • Develop and manage connections with health data partners, ensuring secure, reliable and scalable data flow.
  • Implement privacy-preserving architectures, including building self-hosted LLMs and AI agents, fine-tuning models, and building AI-native applications.
  • Perform extensive testing to ensure system security, reliability, and compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Optimize backend systems for performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate with product and design teams to deliver seamless, user-focused solutions.

****āœ… What we’re looking for

  • Experience working on LLMs and building AI agents, including multi-agent systems.
  • Exceptional software engineering skills with a bias for action and love of solving tough problems; experience at a small startup is ideal.
  • Ability to think critically, communicate ideas effectively, solve problems creatively, and adapt to a fast-paced development environment.
  • Experience with FHIR, CCDA, and related standards is a plus. Including building highly secure, privacy preserving and robust software stacks in regulated industries - fintech, healthcare.
  • Familiarity with ontologies, knowledge graphs, vector databases, and RAG is a plus.
