Job Summary

Northeastern University is seeking a talented Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain innovative software solutions that support academic, research, and administrative initiatives across the university. The Software Engineer will collaborate with faculty, researchers, and cross-functional teams to build scalable applications, improve system performance, and implement modern software engineering best practices. This role requires strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to deliver high-quality software in an Agile environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable web and enterprise applications using modern programming languages and frameworks.

  • Build and integrate RESTful APIs and microservices to support university systems and third-party applications.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, define technical specifications, and deliver software solutions aligned with business needs.

  • Develop responsive front-end interfaces and robust back-end services using technologies such as React, Angular, Java, Python, or Node.js.

  • Optimize application performance, database queries, and system reliability through continuous monitoring and performance tuning.

  • Implement secure authentication, authorization, and data protection practices following university security standards.

  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code while adhering to software development best practices.

  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and automated tests to ensure software quality and reliability.

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, code reviews, and retrospectives.

  • Troubleshoot production issues, provide timely resolutions, and support ongoing system maintenance.

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Git, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Docker, and Kubernetes.

  • Maintain technical documentation and mentor junior developers and student employees when needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.

  • Experience developing software applications using Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, or similar programming languages.

  • Experience with front-end frameworks such as React or Angular.

  • Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or SQL Server.

  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs.

  • Familiarity with Git version control and Agile software development methodologies.

  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.

  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD automation.

  • Experience supporting higher education, research computing, or enterprise applications.

  • Familiarity with identity management, OAuth, SAML, or Single Sign-On technologies.

  • Experience working with DevOps practices and infrastructure automation.
