Parks Maintenance Worker

Under supervision, performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in construction and maintenance tasks and operates public works and or parks equipment. Assignments may include general landscaping in Town parks and open spaces, grounds and building maintenance, street maintenance, and storm drainage.

The Maintenance Worker position is an entry level class. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn basic maintenance, construction, and safety procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines and incumbents are expected to perform a broader scope of duties.

Receives direction from the Lead Maintenance Worker or Public Works/Parks Maintenance Supervisor, Department Director, or designee May supervises the work of temporary employees as assigned.

**General Duties:**
• Perform a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled maintenance and construction duties related to parks, buildings, streets and storm drainage.
• Operate maintenance and construction equipment and power tools such as a concrete grinder, cutting torch, lawn mowers, chain saws, jack hammer, Bobcat, forklift, skill saw, table saw, and other related equipment and tools; maintain and perform preventative maintenance on assigned tools and equipment and related records.
• Respond to emergencies as needed.
• Utilize and adhere to proper safety precautions in all work performed.
• Maintain traffic control by use of signs, barricades, and safety cones.
• Set up signs, barricades, safety cones and other temporary controls as needed to maintain safe work areas and protect the public during maintenance activities.
• Maintain basic records of daily work performed.
• Supervises the work of temporary employees as assigned.
• Coordinate with and support Parks and Public Works operations as needed.

**Parks Maintenance (in addition to the general duties):**
• Provide manual labor related to parks, landscaped public areas, recreational and open space amenities as directed including digging holes removing trees raking removing trash/litter/debris/graffiti planting trees and shrubs.
• Perform minor park facility maintenance carpentry work to replace or repair fences picnic tables benches signs other park or recreational facilities.
• Plant prune maintain plants trees.

**Public Works Maintenance (in addition to the general duties):**
• Perform manual labor related to streets rights-of-way medians storm drains stormwater facilities streetlights buildings as directed including digging shoveling brooming removing broken concrete asphalt other materials.

The Town of Moraga is hiring a full-time maintenance worker in its Parks Maintenance Division.  The Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks, including manual labor in parks, landscaped public areas, and open space.  Weekend availability is at times required for picnic area prep, general park clean-up, and special events.  

Most hours will occur during maintenance operation hours: Saturday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.

Evening hours are required for special events and will be scheduled accordingly.

After-hours emergencies in the evening or on weekends may require availability.

Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance, and repair related to parks maintenance, public works maintenance and building maintenance.

Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in parks maintenance, public works maintenance and building maintenance.

Basic techniques of carpentry, plumbing, and painting.

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Construction principles and practices.

Ability to:

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Be flexible to work a varied schedule including weekends and evenings.  

Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Operate a variety of vehicles and stationary mechanical equipment safely and effectively

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Organize, prioritize and follow up on work assignments

Work independently with minimal supervision, an as part of a team.

Education and Experience

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Generally, this will require:

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.

License or Certificate 

A valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Valid CPR and First Aid Certification or be willing to obtain certification through Town-sponsored training.
