Job description

Job role:

  • Receive phone calls and office visitors requesting changes to existing coverage and/or new policies. Determine acceptability and placement, complete applications or endorsement requests and collect premium when applicable.

  • Review existing accounts to determine if additional lines of insurance should be solicited and do so by mail and phone.

  • Receive and review all cancellations to determine necessary action.

  • Handle premium collection and cancel policies when necessary.

  • Review renewals to determine if non-standard policies can be rewritten in a standard program. Prepare rewrite applications for business from companies no longer represented. Secure and submit required renewal underwriting information.

  • Maintain own follow-up and suspense file on outstanding orders and correspondence. Follow up on all overdue and suspense items. Maintain expiration control log.

  • Maintain underwriting files in an orderly, up-to-date manner.

  • Actively solicit increases in coverage or rounding out accounts through sales to clients at every service contact.

  • Actively seek referrals from current client base to solicit for new business prospects; follow up to generate new business using prospect data base and system.

  • Process renewals and remarkets, as needed.

  • Maintain customer's account on agency automation system, documenting in activity log, sending confirmations to insured's and adhering to all other automation procedures that are/become established.

  • Knowledgeable of underwriting and rating procedures for all types of personal lines policies.

  • Explain coverage and exclusions to clients as necessary.

  • Prepare summaries of insurance, schedules and proposals, using computerized system.

  • Keep producers fully informed of important activities on their accounts.

  • Prepare proposals on new and renewal business as required.

  • Perform all actions relating to the public, customers and companies in a manner that will avoid issues involving potential errors and omissions.

  • Participate in seminars and other training to maintain required licenses and for knowledge and skill development.

  • Perform other duties as requested.


Marginal Functions:

  • Insure that on all out-of-state business, the writing company is aware of non-resident and countersignature arrangement in the state where the risk is located.

  • Invoice premium transactions during month.

  • Provide training to others as requested.

  • Actively refer clients to Life & Benefits and Commercial Lines department for solicitation of new business.


Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must be a self-starter, imaginative and creative with good communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Should have thorough understanding of personal lines underwriting and coverages.


Other Requirements:

  • Minimum two years experience in similar position with underwriting and rating background and must be licensed as per state requirements. College degree preferred.

  • Must have licenses as required by the State Department of Insurance.

  • Ability to perform 80% sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and negligible force frequently.
