Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant to join its Waverly, Iowa office. This position is intended for a tax professional with at least five years of progressive public-accounting experience who is interested in establishing a long-term career with a clear opportunity to pursue firm ownership.
The Senior Tax Accountant will lead complex tax preparation and planning engagements for corporations, partnerships, and individuals. This person will also serve as a trusted client advisor, research technical tax matters, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the firm’s continued growth.
This hiring need is specific to the Waverly office. Candidates must reside locally or be willing to commute reliably to Waverly at least three days per week. Relocation assistance is not available.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review complex federal and state income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, C corporations, and S corporations.
Develop proactive tax-planning strategies based on each client’s business, financial, and personal circumstances.
Ensure filings comply with applicable federal, state, and local tax requirements.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and communicate their potential effects to clients and colleagues.
Serve as a trusted advisor to business owners, agricultural clients, individuals, and other organizations throughout Northeast Iowa.
Research complex tax matters and document well-supported technical conclusions.
Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices, examinations, inquiries, and resolution matters.
Review the work of junior accounting staff and provide clear, constructive technical guidance.
Mentor developing professionals and support their continued growth within the firm.
Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
Identify opportunities to provide additional tax, accounting, and financial solutions.
Contribute to client retention, practice development, and the firm’s overall growth.
Demonstrate the leadership, technical judgment, client-service skills, and business awareness expected of a future firm owner.
Required Qualifications
At least five years of progressive public-accounting experience with a focus on individual, corporate, and partnership taxation.
Strong knowledge of federal and state tax compliance, planning, and research.
Experience preparing and reviewing complex income tax returns.
Proficiency with professional tax-preparation and accounting software, such as UltraTax, CCH, or a comparable platform.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent written, verbal, and client-facing communication skills.
Ability to review staff work and explain complex tax matters clearly.
Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines, particularly during peak filing periods.
Local residence or the ability to commute reliably to Waverly, Iowa.
Ability to work from the Waverly office at least three days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
Active Certified Public Accountant license; strongly preferred for candidates pursuing the firm-ownership track.
Enrolled Agent credential may be considered for candidates with substantial, directly relevant tax experience.
Interest in pursuing a long-term leadership and ownership opportunity within a regional public accounting firm.
Knowledge of the Northeast Iowa market, including the needs of agricultural operations, closely held businesses, and individual taxpayers.
Established community ties or experience serving clients in Waverly and surrounding communities along the US 20 corridor.
Experience developing business, expanding client relationships, or introducing additional advisory services.
Previous experience mentoring or supervising junior accounting professionals.
