**About the company**

An early-stage, seed-funded AI startup building the foundational infrastructure that powers internal AI agents for large, complex organizations, including government agencies, hospitals, banks, and Fortune 500 enterprises. The platform provides the core building blocks (evaluation, observability, routing, authentication, permissions, sandboxing, and more) needed to deploy agents securely at scale, and already supports multiple model providers and agent harnesses in production.

**The role**

You'll join a small, high-ownership engineering team building the core platform primitives that every customer deployment runs on. This is a backend-heavy role: you'll help build and evolve a proprietary optimization algorithm at the heart of the platform, and own infrastructure for secure, regulated deployments. The team is tiny today, fully in-person, and expects everyone to genuinely parallelize their own work using agentic coding tools while still going deep technically, not just shipping surface-level features.

**What you'll do**

- Build and own core backend platform primitives, including routing, integration layers, and evaluation/benchmarking systems

- Develop and maintain the platform's proprietary optimization algorithm that tunes agent performance

- Design and ship sandboxed infrastructure for regulated deployments in government, healthcare, and banking environments

- Ship production code across the platform's backend stack while using agentic coding tools to parallelize across multiple workstreams at once

- Work directly with the Head of Engineering and founding team on architectural and product decisions

**What you must bring**

- Proficiency across the platform's backend stack, with genuine comfort shipping production-grade backend systems

- Real fluency with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, or equivalent), with the ability to multi-thread across parallel workstreams rather than coding purely manually

- 2–5 years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time at one or more startups rather than exclusively at large tech companies

- Experience building and owning backend systems in production, including APIs, platform infrastructure, or distributed systems

- Willingness to work fully in-person in San Francisco, five days a week

**Nice to have**

- Direct experience working with AI agents, agentic workflows, or agent frameworks in a production environment

- Background at a hyper-growth AI company, or at a strong-pedigree startup following a stint at a large tech company

- Prior founder experience, or having been a deeply instrumental early employee at a startup

- A strong CS program background, competitive programming experience, or a quantitative background

- Personal side projects, writing, or thesis work showing self-directed technical thinking

- Front-end development familiarity as a secondary skill alongside strong backend depth

**Compensation & logistics**

- $150K–$300K base salary plus 0.6%–2.0% equity

- Relocation support and a grace period available for candidates based elsewhere

- Fully in-person, five days a week, in San Francisco

- 1 opening

- Not open to any visa sponsorship — candidates must already be authorized to work in the US

**This isn't the right fit if**

- Your background is exclusively at large tech companies with no startup experience

- Your work history shows an unexplained pattern of leaving jobs right around vesting cliffs

- You prefer coding manually over genuinely parallelizing your work with agentic tools

- You're looking for a large, established team rather than a three-person engineering group building from the ground up
