About HEAL
HEAL is a design-led digital health company building at the intersection of technology, design, and human emotion. We're creating an intelligent care system of connected hardware and AI that people will trust with some of the most personal moments of their day. Trust like that has to be engineered into every layer: the device, the firmware, and the cloud it talks to.
The Role
You'll own the bridge between HEAL's physical product and its intelligence. You'll bring together mechanical, electrical, and software systems into a secure, reliable connected device, working closely with our mechanical engineering and software teams and reporting directly to the CEO. This is a founding-level role with real ownership over how our hardware thinks, moves, and stays secure.
What You'll Do
Design and integrate electromechanical systems (sensors, actuators, motors, and control electronics) into a consumer-grade health device
Develop embedded firmware and control logic, and own the device-to-cloud connection
Build security into the hardware layer: secure boot, encrypted communication, tamper resistance, and safe firmware updates
Work with the software lead to connect the device to HEAL's AI infrastructure reliably and safely
Take prototypes from bench to test to manufacturable design
Define testing, validation, and reliability standards for a product people will depend on daily
Who You Are
Experienced mechatronics engineer (7+ years) with shipped hardware products
Strong in embedded systems and low-level programming (C/C++, RTOS, microcontrollers). You write and fully understand your own code, without AI code generation, especially in firmware and security-critical systems.
Hands-on knowledge of hardware and IoT security
Familiar with AI infrastructure and how edge devices interact with cloud and ML systems
Comfortable across the stack: PCB design, sensor integration, control systems, and system debugging
Based in or able to work from San Francisco
Bonus Points
Experience with medical devices, FDA design controls, or ISO 13485
Background in design for manufacturing (DFM) and working with contract manufacturers
Experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, or cellular connected devices
Prior early-stage startup or founding engineer experience
Compensation
Founding-level equity
Deferred cash compensation and performance bonus tied to funding milestones
A chance to define the core hardware of a category-defining health product
